Planquette, (Jean) Robert (b Paris, 1848; d Paris, 1903). Fr. composer. Began career by writing songs for the ‘cafés-chantants’, then turned to comic opera. Wrote about 20 operettas, most popular being Les cloches de Corneville (1877). Also Rip Van Winkle (1882), Surcouf (1887, as Paul Jones 1889), and Panurge (1895).
