Pickett, Philip
Pickett, Philip, esteemed English recorder player, conductor, and teacher; b. London, Nov. 17, 1950. He was initiated into the world of early wind instruments by Anthony Baines and David Munrow, and subsequently made that field his specialty. He mastered the recorder and learned to play other early instruments, including the shawm, crumbhorn, and rackett. He appeared as recorder soloist with the leading British ensembles. He also founded and directed the New London Consort, which he conducted throughout Europe. From 1972 he served as prof, of recorder at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. In 1995 he became conductor of the Musicians of the Globe, which became well known via performances at the New Globe Theatre in London. He conducted the New London Consort in its U.S. debut at the Mostly Mozart Festival in N.Y. in 1999. As both performer and conductor, Pickett brings erudition and mastery to his vast early music repertoire.
