Pease, James
Pease, James, American bass-baritone; b. Indianapolis, Jan. 9,1916; d. N.Y., April 26,1967. He studied at the Curtis Inst. of Music in Philadelphia. In 1941 he made his operatic debut as Gounod’s Méphistophélès at the Philadelphia Opera. On May 9, 1946, he made his first appearance at the N.Y.C. Opera as Sparafucile, where he sang until 1953 and again in 1959–60 and 1967. From 1952 to 1959 he also was a member of the Hamburg State Opera. As a guest artist, Pease appeared at London’s Covent Garden, the Zürich Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera, and other opera centers. Among his best roles were Don Giovanni, Figaro, King Marke, Hans Sachs, and Baron Ochs.
