Paul, Oskar
Paul, Oskar , German music scholar; b. Freiwaldau, April 8,1836; d. Leipzig, April 18,1898. He studied with Plaidy, Richter, and Hauptmann at the Univ. of Leipzig (Ph.D., 1860). He was prof, of music history, piano, and composition at the Leipzig Cons, (from 1869) and prof, extraordinarius at the Univ. of Leipzig (from 1872), and also music critic of the Leipziger Tagblatt. He adapted Hauptmann’s Lehre von der Harmonik for practical usages and publ. the result under the title Lehrbuch der Harmonik (Leipzig, 1880; Eng. tr., N.Y., 1885). He also pubi. Geschichte des Klaviers (Leipzig, 1869), Handlexikon der Tonkunst (Leipzig, 1871–73), and Musikalische Instrumente (Braunschweig, 1874).
