Pakhmutova, Alexandra (Nikolaievna)
Pakhmutova, Alexandra (Nikolaievna), Russian composer; b. Beketovka, near Stalingrad, Nov. 9,1929. She studied at the Moscow Cons, with Shebalin, graduating in 1953. She was particularly successful in the genre of urban ballads, close to contemporary reality. Among them, especially popular were her Songs of Turbulent Youth (1961), Cuba, My Love (1962), Keep Your Heart Young (1963), Young Eagles Learn to Fly (1965), A Coward Will Not Play Hockey (1968), Let Us Embrace the Sky (1966), Gagarin’s Constellation (1971), Sport Heroes (1972), and Hope (1974). Her Trumpet Concerto acquired great popularity in Russia.
