Otto, Georg

Otto, Georg, German composer; b. Torgau, 1550; d. Kassel (buried), Nov. 30, 1618. He was educated at the monastery school in Schulpforta (1564–68) and at the Univ. of Leipzig (1568–69). After serving as municipal Kantor in Langensalza (1569–86), he was Kapellmeister at the court of the Landgrave of Hessen-Kassel (from 1586). Germany’s first court theater, the Ottoneum in Kassel (1605), was named in his honor. Among his students were Moritz, the Landgrave’s heir, and Schütz. He pubi. 3 vols, of sacred vocal music (1574,1588,1604). Some of his works remain in manuscript collections.
