Oborin, Lev (Nikolaievich)
Oborin, Lev (Nikolaievich), Russian pianist, pedagogue, and composer; b. Moscow, Sept. 11, 1907; d. there, Jan. 5, 1974. He studied with Elena Gnessina at the Gnessin Music School in Moscow and with Igumnov at the Moscow Cons, (graduated, 1926). He made his debut in 1924; won the Chopin Competition in Warsaw (1927), then toured widely; was also on the faculty of the Moscow Cons. (1928–74). He was made a People’s Artist of the U.S.S.R. in 1964. He was known for his wide sympathies as an interpreter, ranging from the classics to the Soviet school; was soloist in the premiere of Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto. He wrote piano sonatas and other works for piano, as well as several orch. pieces.
