Nowowiejski, Felix

Nowowiejski, Felix, Polish organist, conductor, and composer; b. Wartenburg, Feb. 7, 1877; d. Poznań, Jan. 18, 1946. He studied in Berlin with Bussler at the Stern Cons., with Bruch at the Königliche Musikakademie, and with Friedlaender, Ballermann, and Dessoir at the Univ.; also received some instruction from Dvořák in Prague, winning the Paderewski Prize in 1903. He was director of the Kraków Music Soc. (1909–14) and a prof. at the Poznań Cons. (1920–27). A competent composer, he followed the line of German Romanticism.

dramatic: 2 operas: Emigranti (The Emigrants; 1917) AND Legenda Baltyku (Baltic Legend; Poznań, 1924); several ballets. orch.: 5 syms. (1903–41; 1st not extant); Cello Concerto (1938); Piano Concerto (1941). keyboard: Piano pieces; organ works. vocal: Much choral music, including oratorios, masses, cantatas, patriotic works, etc.; songs.
