Musicescu, Gavriil
Musicescu, Gavriil, Rumanian choral conductor, teacher, and composer; b. Ismail, March 20, 1847; d. Iasi, Dec. 21, 1903. He studied at the Ia§i Cons, and later at the St. Petersburg Cons. In 1872 he was appointed a prof, at the Ia§i Cons., becoming its director in 1901. He composed liturgical hymns and Psalms as well as secular choral works and songs for solo voice. In his secular works, he utilized folk songs. He also made arrangements of folk songs. A selected vol. of his music was ed. by G. Breazul (Bucharest, 1958).
