Mureşianu, Iacob, Romanian conductor, teacher, editor, and composer; b. Braşov, July 11, 1857; d. Blaj, June 6, 1917. Following training with his father, a folklorist, he studied at the Vienna Polytechnic School and with Jadassohn, Reinecke, and Weidenbach at the Leipzig Cons. He settled in Blaj as a conductor and teacher, and also was founder-editor of the periodical Musa română (Romanian Muse; 1888–1907). Mureşianu played a significant role in the development of Romanian national music via his utilization of folk elements in his compositions. He composed the operetta Millo director (Director Millo; 1910; orch. by I. Mureşianu), several vaudevilles, the overture ştefan cel Mare (Stefan the Great; 1882), Mănăstirea Argeşului (The Monastery of Arges) for 3 Soloists, Chorus, and Orch. (1884; rev. 1895), Erculeanul for 4 Soloists, Chorus, and Orch. (1890), songs, and many piano pieces.
