Mshvelidze, Shalva (Mikhailovich)
Mshvelidze, Shalva (Mikhailovich), Russian ethnomusicologist, teacher, and composer; b. Tiflis, May 28, 1904; d. there (Tbilisi), March 4, 1984. He studied with Bagrinovsky at the Tiflis Cons., graduating in 1930, and with Shcherbachev, Tyulin, Steinberg, and Ryazanov at the Leningrad Cons. He was made a teacher (1929) and a prof. (1942) at the Tbilisi Cons. He was a leading figure in Georgian music.
