Monod, Jacques-Louis, French pianist, conductor, music editor, and composer; b. Asnières, near Paris, Feb. 25, 1927. He was admitted to the Paris Cons, before he had reached the official entrance age of 9, later studying with Messiaen (1944) and receiving instruction in theory, composition, and analysis from Leibowitz (1944–50). He subsequently studied composition with Wagenaar at N.Y/s Juilliard School of Music and conducting with Rudolf Thomas at Columbia Univ., and then took courses with Blacher and Rufer in Berlin. As a pianist and conductor, he became a proponent of modern music. He was married for a time to Bethany Beardslee , with whom he gave many song recitals. He was chief music ed. of the Boelke-Bomart firm (1952–82); was also active as a teacher at various U.S. academic institutions. He wrote orch. works, chamber music, and songs.
