Maxakova, Mariya (Petrovna)
Maxakova, Mariya (Petrovna), Russian mezzo-soprano; b. Astrakhan, April 8, 1902; d. Moscow, Aug. 11, 1974. She was a student of Maximilian Maxa-kov, whom she married. After singing in Astrakhan, she appeared at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater in 1923. From 1925 to 1927 she sang at the Leningrad Academy Opera. In 1927 she became a member of the Bolshoi Theater, where she sang until 1953. She also appeared as a concert artist. In addition to her distinguished Russian roles, she won particular notice for her Ortrud, Dalila, and Carmen.
