Mastilović, Danica

Mastilović, Danica, Yugoslav soprano; b. Negotin, Nov. 7, 1933. She was a pupil of Nikola Cvejic in Belgrade; while still a student, she sang with the Belgrade Operetta Theater (1955–59); in 1959 she made her formal operatic debut as Tosca at the Frankfurt am Main Opera, where she sang until 1969. Her guest appearances took her to Hamburg, Vienna, Munich, Bayreuth, Paris, and London. In 1963 she made her first U.S. appearance at the Chicago Lyric Opera as Abigaille, and on Nov. 25, 1975, her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Elektra. In 1973 she made her first appearance at London’s Covent Garden as Elektra. In 1978–79 she was again on the roster of the Metropolitan Opera. She became principally known for her roles in operas by Verdi, Wagner, and Strauss.
