Marx, Josef
Marx, Josef, German-American oboist, English horn player, musicologist, and music publisher; b. Berlin, Sept. 9, 1913; d. N.Y, Dec. 21, 1978. He emigrated to America in his early youth, and studied oboe with Dandois at the Cincinnati Cons. and with Goossens in London. He then took lessons in theory with Wolpe. He was an oboist in the Palestine Orch. (1936–37) and the Pittsburgh Sym. Orch. (1942–43), and then played English horn in the orch. of the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. (1943–51). In addition, he appeared as an oboe soloist; several contemporary composers wrote special works for him. In 1945 he founded the McGinnis-Marx Edition in N.Y., which publ. works by Wolpe, Wuorinen, Sydeman, Schuller, and other contemporary composers. From 1956 to 1960 he taught oboe at the Hartt Coll. of Music in Hartford.
