Marshall, Margaret (Anne)

Marshall, Margaret (Anne), Scottish soprano; b. Stirling, Jan. 4, 1949. She studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Glasgow, and also took voice lessons with Edna Mitchell and Peter Pears in England and with Hans Hotter in Munich. In 1974 she won 1st prize at the International Competition in Munich. She made her London concert debut in 1975, and in 1978 her operatic debut in Florence as Euridice in Orfeo. She then sang the role of the Countess in the 1979 Florence production of Le nozze di Figaro, and made her Covent Garden debut in London in the same role in 1980. In 1982 she appeared as Fiordiligi at La Scala in Milan and at the Salzburg Festival. She made her first appearances in the U.S. in 1980 as a soloist with the Boston Sym. Orch. and N.Y. Phil.; subsequently made several American tours as a concert artist. In 1988 she made her first appearance at the Vienna State Opera as Mozart’s Countess. During the 1991–92 season, she appeared at the Mozart Bicentenary Gala at Covent Garden and also sang Fiordiligi in Salzburg. In 1999 she was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
