Märkl, Jun, German conductor; b. Munich, Feb. 11, 1959. He received diplomas in violin and conducting from the Hannover Hochschule für Musik, and then had further studies in conducting with Bakels, Celibi-dache, Gustav Meier, Bernstein, and Ozawa. In 1989 he was named to the position of first conductor of the Darmstadt State Theater, and of the Mannheim National Theater in 1990. He became Generalmusikdirektor of the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken in 1992. From 1994 he served as Generalmusikdirektor of the Mannheim National Theater. As a guest conductor, he appeared with the Berlin State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, London, and at the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y.
