Manrique de Lara (y Berry), Manuel, Spanish composer, folklorist, and music critic; b. Cartagena,Oct. 24, 1863; d. St. Blasien, Germany, Feb. 27, 1929. After training with a military bandsman, he pursued music studies with Chapi in Madrid (1886). He joined the Spanish Army, attaining the rank of brigadier general. He also was active as a music critic in Madrid (1910–20) and as a folklorist, collecting Spanish ballads of the Sephardic communities in the Near East (1910–11) and in Spanish Morocco (1915–16). He composed El ciudadano Simon, zarzuela (1900), Rodrigo de Vivar (El cid), opera (1906), Sym. (1890), La Orestiada, symphonic trilogy, and chamber works.
