Mailing, Jørgen (Henrik)
Mailing, Jørgen (Henrik), Danish organist, teacher, and composer; b. Copenhagen, Oct. 31,1836; d. there, July 12, 1905. He studied with Gade, and was 1stwinner of the Ancher stipend in 1861. He went to Paris and became enthusiastic over Cheve’s system of vocal notation, which he tried (unsuccessfully) to introduce in various cities in Scandinavia and Russia. He was an organist in Svendborg (1869–72), then lived in Vienna (1879–82) and Munich (1882–95) before returning to Copenhagen in 1901, where he was active as a teacher and composer. He wrote the operas Lisenka and Frithjof, a cantata, Kilvala, String Quartet, Piano Trio, numerous piano pieces, and songs.
