Lobaczewska (Gerard de Festenburg), Stefania, Polish musicologist; b. Lemberg, July 31, 1888; d. Krakow, Jan. 16,1963. She studied piano with V. Kurc at the Lemberg Cons., then musicology with Adler at the Univ. of Vienna and with Chybinski at the Univ. of Lemberg (1914–18; Ph.D., 1929, with the diss. O harmonice Klaudiusza Achillesa Debussy’ ego w pierwszym okresie jego twórczosci[Claude Achille Debussy’s Harmony in His First Creative Period]; publ, in Kwartalnik Muzyczny, II/5,1929–30); completed her Habilitation at the Univ. of Poznan in 1949, with his Karol Szymanowski: Zycie i twórczosc (1882–1937) (Karol Szymanowski: Life and Works [1882–1937]; publ, in Krakow, 1950). She taught at the Szymanowski School of Music in Lwów (1931–39) and at the Lwów Cons. (1940–41), then went to Krakow (1945), where she became a prof. at the State Coll. of Music; later served as its rector until 1955; was also head of the musicology dept. at the Univ. of Krakow (1952–63).
