Linnala, Eino (Mauno Aleksanteri)

Linnala, Eino (Mauno Aleksanteri), Finnish composer and teacher; b. Helsinki, Aug. 19, 1896; d. there, June 8, 1973. He studied composition with Melartin (1915–20), at the Univ. of Helsinki, in Berlin (1922), and with Willner in Vienna (1924–27). Linnala taught theory and analysis at the Univ. of Helsinki (1927–66), and was also chairman of the Finnish Composers’ Copyright Bureau (1960–68). He publ. several textbooks on theory. His compositions, all composed in the Romantic tradition, included 2 syms. (1927, 1935), Dance Suite for Orch. (1931), Suomalainen rapsodia for Orch. (1932), Overture (1933), Elegia for Orch. (1945), 4 cantatas (1932–40), more than 100 choral songs, chamber music, and about 50 songs.
