Lemmens-Sherrington (originally, Sherrington), Helen
Lemmens-Sherrington (originally, Sherrington), Helen, noted English soprano; b. Preston, Oct. 4, 1834; d. Brussels, May 9, 1906. When she was 4 her family took her to Rotterdam, where she had vocal training with Verhulst; then entered the Brussels Cons. (1852). She made her London debut as a concert singer (April 7, 1856); later sang with the English Opera (1860–65) and at Covent Garden (1866), where she appeared as Donna Elvira, Adalgisa, Isabella in Robert le diable, and Elisabeth de Valois; however, it was as a concert and oratorio singer that she gained her greatest distinction. She married Jacques Nicolas Lemmens (actually, Jaak Nikolaas Lemmens ) in 1857. After his death, she made her home in Brussels. She continued to make appearances as a singer until 1894, but devoted herself mainly to teaching at the Brussels Cons. She also taught at the Royal Manchester Coll. of Music (1893–97).
