Leeuw, Reinbert de
Leeuw, Reinbert de, Dutch composer and conductor, brother of Ton de Leeuw; b. Amsterdam, Sept. 8, 1938. He studied at the Amsterdam Cons. In 1963 he was appointed to the faculty of the Royal Cons, of The Hague. A political activist, he collaborated with Louis Andriessen, Mischa Mengelberg, Peter Schat, and Jan van Vlijmen on the anti-American multimedia spectacle Reconstructie, produced during the Holland Festival in Amsterdam on June 29, 1969. He further wrote an opera, Axel (with Vlijmen; 1977), Solo I for Cello (1961), 3 Positions for Violin (1963), String Quartet (1963), Interplay for Orch. (1965), Hymns and Chorals for 15 Winds, 2 Electric Guitars, and Electric Organ (Amsterdam, July 5, 1970), Duets for Recorder (1971), and Abschied, symphonic poem (1971-73; Rotterdam, May 11, 1974). In later years, he was active as a conductor of contemporary music. In 1994 he became director of the Tangle-wood Festival of Contemporary Music. He publ. a book about Ives (with J. Bemlef; Amsterdam, 1969) and a collection of 17 articles, Muzikale anarchie (Amsterdam, 1973).
