Lane, Eastwood

Lane, Eastwood, American composer; b. Brewer-ton, N.Y., May 22, 1879; d. Central Square, N.Y, Jan. 22, 1951. He attended Syracuse Univ. (1898–1901), but left before graduating. He taught himself piano but did not learn to read music until late in his life. From 1910 to 1933 he was asst. director of N.Y.’s Wanamaker Concerts. He wrote mostly piano pieces in a light, descriptive vein: In Sleepy Hollow, 4 tone pictures (1913); 5 American Dances (1919); Adirondack Sketches (1922); Mon-goliana, suite (1922); Eastern Seas, suite (1925; includes Sea Burial, orchestrated by F. Grofé); Persimmon Pucker (1926; orchestrated by F. Grofé); Sold Down the River, ballet suite (1928); Pantomimes (c. 1933); 4th of July (1935; orchestrated by F. Grofé); Here Are Ladies, 5 pieces (1944).
