Krivine, Emmanuel

Krivine, Emmanuel, French conductor; b. Grenoble, May 7, 1947. He studied violin at the Paris Cons., winning a premier prix at age 16. After further studies at Brussels Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth, he completed his training with Szeryng and Menuhin. While pursuing his career as a violinist, he also launched a 2nd career as a conductor in 1976, and received instruction in conducting from Böhm. Following an automobile accident in 1981, he was compelled to give up violin playing and devote himself to conducting. Having conducted regularly for the ORTF in Paris, he then was principal conductor of the Orchestre Philharmonique in Lorraine (1981–83). On Jan. 30, 1987, he made his U.S. debut as a guest conductor with the Indianapolis Sym. Orch. He was music director of the Orchestre de Lyon from 1987 to 2000. In addition to appearances with leading French orchs., he appeared widely in Europe and North America.
