Koréh, Endre
Koréh, Endre, Hungarian bass; b. Sepsiszent-györgy, April 13, 1906; d. Vienna, Sept. 20, 1960. He was a student of Arpad Palotay in Budapest. In 1930 he made his operatic debut at the Budapest Opera as Sparafucile, and then sang there regularly. In 1948 he became a member of the Vienna State Opera. He also appeared in Salzburg, Glyndebourne, Florence, Paris, Rome, and other European opera centers. On Jan. 22, 1953, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Baron Ochs, remaining on its roster until the close of the season. He was best known for his buffo roles, excelling especially in operas by Mozart, Verdi, and Wagner. He also created the role of Caliban in Frank Martin’s opera Der Sturm, after Shakespeare’s The Tempest (Vienna, June 17, 1956).
