Kolneder, Walter

Kolneder, Walter, noted Austrian musicologist; b. Wels, July 1, 1910; d. Karlsruhe, Jan. 30, 1994. He studied composition privately with Johann Nepomuk David (1927–29); also studied with Paumgartner (conducting) and Strub (viola) at the Salzburg Mozarteum (1925–35); took courses in musicology at the Univ. of Vienna (1934–35) and with W. Fischer at the Univ. of Innsbruck (Ph.D., 1949, with the diss. Die vokale Mehrstimmigkeit in der Volksmusik der österreichischen Alpenländer) completed his Habilitation at the Univ. of Saarbrücken with his Antonio Vivaldi:Neue Studien zur Biographie und Stilistik seiner Werke (extracts in Aufführungspraxis bei Vivaldi, Leipzig, 1955; 2^nd ed., 1973). He taught at the Graz Cons. (1936–39) and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musikerziehung in Graz-Eggenberg (1936–45); was director of the Luxembourg Cons. (1953–59); also was a Privatdozent at the Univ. of Saarbrücken (from 1956). He was director of the Darmstadt Academy from 1959 to 1965 and of the Karlsruhe Hochschule für Musik from 1966 to 1972; was made ausserplanmässiger prof, of musicology at the Univ. of Karlsruhe (1966).
