Knushevitsky, Sviatoslav (Nikolaievich)
Knushevitsky, Sviatoslav (Nikolaievich), Russian cellist and teacher; b. Petrovsk, Jan. 6, 1908; d. Moscow, Feb. 19, 1963. He was a pupil at the Moscow Cons, of Kozolupov. From 1929 to 1943 he was first cellist in the orch. of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. After taking 1st prize in the All-Union competition in Moscow in 1933, he also pursued a solo career. From 1942 to 1963 he taught at the Moscow Cons., where he was head of the cello and double bass dept. (1954–59). Glière, Miaskovsky, and A. Khachaturian wrote concertos for him.
