Kauffmann, Leo Justinus
Kauffmann, Leo Justinus , German composer;b. Dammerkirch, Sept. 20, 1901; d. in an air raid in Strasbourg, Sept. 25, 1944. He studied with Erb in Strasbourg and with Jarnach and Abendroth in Cologne. He taught at Cologne’s Rheinische Musikschule (1929–32) and worked for the Cologne Radio (1932–33); later taught at the Strasbourg Cons., serving as its director until his death. He wrote the operas Die Geschichte vom schönen Anneri (Strasbourg, June 20, 1942) and Das Perlenhem (Strasbourg, 1944), as well as a Sym., Concertino for Double Bass and Chamber Orch., and Mass.
