Josephson, Jacob Axel
Josephson, Jacob Axel, Swedish conductor, organist, teacher, and composer; b. Stockholm, March 27, 1818; d. Uppsala, March 29, 1880. He studied at the Univ. of Uppsala, and in 1844 he went to Germany, where he studied with Hauptmann and Gade in Leipzig. After further study in Rome (1845–46), he returned to Uppsala as conductor of the Univ. orch. He was founder-conductor of the Filharmoniska Sallskäpet (1849) and also conducted the noted men’s chorus Orphei Dränger (from 1854). He was organist at the Cathedral (from 1864) and taught music history at the Univ. (from 1864). He composed a Sym., choral works, and songs, and also publ, two vols, of sacred songs (Zion, monthly issues, 1867-70; Sänger i Zion, 1880).
