Jones, Snags(actually, Clifford)

Jones, Snags(actually, Clifford ), jazz drummer; b. New Orleans, La., c. 1900; d. Chicago, Jan. 31, 1947. His irregularly placed teeth inspired his nickname. Jones went to school with Lee Collins and Buddie Petit, then played for a year in Petit’s Band. He then joined Jack Carey’s Band, and later played in Papa Celestini Band and Armand Piron’s Orch. In 1922, he moved to Chicago to join trumpeter Tig Chambers at Joyland Park; during the following year he worked with Al Simeon’s Hot Six, then toured with King Oliver (1924). Jones spent several years based in Milwaukee with Art Simms and Bernie Young until 1931. He spent most of the 1930s working with various bands in the Chicago area. In the postwar Dixielandrevival, he worked with Bunk Johnson in Chicago, playing club dates with him and other leaders until his death.
