Jeep (Jepp), Johannes (Johann)

Jeep (Jepp), Johannes (Johann), German organist and composer; b. Dransfeld, near Göttingen, 1581 or 1582; d. Hanau, Nov. 19, 1644. In his youth he sang in the Celle Hofkapelle, then studied in Nuremberg and Altdorf and later traveled in France and Italy. He became Kapellmeister and organist of the court of the Count of Hohenlohe in Weikersheim (1613), deputy organist at the Frankfurt am Main Cathedral (1635–36), and then municipal Kapellmeister of Frankfurt am Main (1637–40). After working in Hanau schools, he served as Kapellmeister of the chapel of Count Ernst of Hanau-Münzenberg and organist of the St. Marien Church (1642–44). He was best known for his collection of 34 songs publ. in his Studentengärtlein.He also composed over 100 hymns and Psalm settings.
