Jachet di Mantua (Jacques Colebault)
Jachet di Mantua (Jacques Colebault), important French-born Italian composer; b. Vitre, 1483; d. Mantua, Oct. 2, 1559. He was in the service of the Rangoni family in Modena as a singer by 1519, then was at the Este court in Ferrara in 1525. Around 1526 he went to Mantua, where he became a citizen in 1534. He was titular maestro di cappella at the Cathedral of Ss. Peter and Paul (1534–59). He was one of the leading composers of sacred music of his era. A complete edition of his works, ed. by P. Jackson and G. Nugent, was publ, in the Corpus Mensurabilis Musicae series from 1970 to 1982.
