Hoppin, Richard H(allowell)

Hoppin, Richard H(allowell), American musicologist; b. Northfield, Minn., Feb. 22, 1913; d. Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 1, 1991. He studied piano at the École Normale de Musique in Paris (1933–35), and musicol-ogy at Harvard Univ. (M.A., 1938; Ph.D., 1952). He was on the music faculty of the Univ. of Tex., Austin (1949–61); in 1961 he was appointed prof, of music at Ohio State Univ. In 1959-60 he was the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship. He ed. the important collection The Cypriot-French Repertory of the Manuscript Torino, Biblioteca Nazionale, J. II. 9., Corpus Mensurabilis Musi-cae, XXI (1960–63), and also publ, the invaluable An Introduction to Medieval Music (N.Y., 1978).
