Hesse, Max
Hesse, Max, German music publisher; b. Sondershausen, Feb. 18, 1858; d. Leipzig, Nov. 24, 1907. In 1880 he founded a publishing house, with headquarters in Leipzig, and in 1915 the firm moved to Berlin. Among its most important publications were the 3rd through 11th eds. of Riemann’s Musik Lexikon (1887–1929) and H. J. Moser ’s Musik-Lexikon. Great devastation was wreaked on the physical materials of the firm by air bombardment during World War II. After the war the firm was re- established in Berlin.
