Herold, Johannes
Herold, Johannes, German composer; b. Jena, c. 1550; d. Weimar (buried), Sept. 8, 1603. He was active in Klagenfurt by 1593, where he served as cantor of the evangelical collegiate school and as director of plain-chant and polyphony at the church of St. Egydi. In 1601 he was made Kapellmeister of the Weimar court chapel. Herold distinguished himself as a composer of Protestant church music, most notably in his German Passion Historia des Leidens und Sterbens unsers Herrn und Heilands Jesu Christi aus dem Heiligen Evangelisten Mat-theo mit 6 Stimmen componiert (Graz,1594; ed. in Musik alter Meister, IV, 1955).
