Hass, Sabine, German soprano; b. Braunschweig, April 8, 1949; d. Klagenfurt, Feb. 17, 1999. She received vocal training in Berlin and Munich. In 1970 she made her operatic debut in Stuttgart as Pamina, where she continued to sing regularly. In 1976 she appeared for the first time at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and at the Vienna State Opera. Following an engagement as Reiza in Oberon at the Bregenz Festival in 1977, she sang in various European festivals and opera houses. In 1983 she made her debut at Milan’s La Scala as Isabella in Das Liebesverbot. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. on Jan. 4, 1986, as Elsa. In 1988 she appeared in the title role in Die Liebe der Danae at the Munich Festival, and also portrayed Sieglinde at the Berlin Deutsche Oper. Following engagements in Seattle and Paris as Leonore in 1989, she sang Senta at the Bayreuth Festival in 1991. In 1992 she portrayed Wagner’s Elisabeth in Berlin and his Brünnhilde in Götterdämmerung in Bologna. She appeared as Strauss’s Empress in Florence in 1993, the same year she sang his Dyer’s Wife at the Théâtre du Châtelet and Wagner’s Senta at the Opéra de la Bastille in Paris. In 1997 she was engaged as Elektra in Rome.
