Harmat, Artur

Harmat, Artur, Hungarian composer; b. Nyitrabajna, June 27, 1885; d. Budapest, April 20, 1962. He studied at the Budapest Academy of Music and later took courses in Prague and Berlin. From 1920 to 1946 he was an inspector of singing in the Budapest schools, and from 1924 to 1959 he was a prof, of religious music at the Budapest Academy of Music. He wrote 2 valuable manuals on counterpoint (1947, 1956) and composed a great quantity of church music, based on the lines of Palestrina’s polyphony.

Te Deum for Chorus and Organ (1912–29); Tu es Petrus for Chorus and Orch. (1929); Psalm 150 for Chorus and Instruments (1929); De Profunais for Chorus (1932); Szep Wonka (Fair Helen), cantata (1954); Organ Sonata (1956).
