Gysi, Fritz

Gysi, Fritz, Swiss music critic and musicologist; b. Zofingen, Feb. 18, 1888; d. Zurich, March 5, 1967. He studied at the Basel Cons., and then took courses in musicology and art history at the univs. of Zurich, Berlin, and Bern (Ph.D., 1913, with the diss. Die Entwick-lung der kirchlichen Architektur in der deutschen Schweiz im17. und 18. Jahrhundert; publ. in Zurich, 1914); subsequently completed his Habilitation in music history at the Univ. of Zurich in 1921, where he was made a titular prof, in 1931. He was also a music critic for the Easier Nachrichten and the Basel National-Zeitung (from 1915) and the Zurich Tagesanzeiger (from 1928).
