Goode, Richard (Stephen)

Goode, Richard (Stephen), American pianist;b. N.Y., June 1, 1943. He was a pupil of Elvira Szigeti (1949-52) and Claude Frank (1952-54). He subsequently was an extension student at the Marines Coll. of Music in N.Y. (1954-56), where he trained with Nadia Reisenberg (piano), Carl Schachter (theory), and Carl Bamberger (conducting). He studied with Serkin in Marlboro, Vt., and then privately (1960) and at the Curtis Inst. of Music in Philadelphia (1961-64), where he also studied with Horszowski. After attending the City Coll. of the City Univ. of N.Y (1964-67), he completed his training at the Mannes Coll. of Music (1967-69; B.S., 1969). On Feb. 12, 1962, he made his formal debut inN.Y; his European debut followed at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, in 1964. In 1967 he became a member of the Boston Sym. Chamber Players; from 1969 to 1979 he was a member of the Chamber Music Soc. of Lincoln Center in N.Y. His career as a solo artist was enhanced with his capture of the 1st prize at the Clara Haskil competition in 1973; in 1980 he was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize. He made various appearances as a soloist with orchs. and as a recitalist; also appeared with the Chamber Music Soc. of Lincoln Center again from 1983 to 1989. A non-specialist, he won praise as a virtuoso soloist, compelling recitalist, committed chamber music performer, and sensitive accompanist. His repertoire ranges from the standard literature to contemporary scores.
