Gomes de Araújo, João, Brazilian composer; b. Pindamonhangaba, Aug. 5, 1846; d. Sao Paulo, Sept. 8, 1942. He studied at São Paulo and Milan. In 1905 he became a teacher at the São Paulo Cons., and remained there almost to the end of his long life. His works include 4 operas: Edmea, Carminosa (Milan, 1888), Maria Petrowna (1904; São Paulo, 1929), and Helena (São Paulo, 1910), as well as 6 syms., 6 masses, and vocal and instrumental works.
