Golde, Walter
Golde, Walter, American pianist, vocal teacher, and composer; b. Brooklyn, Jan. 4, 1887; d. Chapel Hill, N.C., Sept. 4, 1963. After piano training with Hugo Troetschel in Brooklyn, he studied at Dartmouth Coll., graduating in 1910. He then went to Vienna, where he took vocal lessons and studied counterpoint and composition with Robert Fuchs at the Cons. Returning to the U.S., he was accompanist to many famous musicians of the day. From 1944 to 1948 he headed the voice dept. of Columbia Univ., and in 1953 he was appointed director of the Inst. of Opera at the Univ. of N.C. He composed a number of attractive songs and piano pieces.
