Glynne, Howell
Glynne, Howell, Welsh bass; b. Swansea, Jan. 24, 1906; d. in an automobile accident in Toronto, Nov. 24, 1969. He labored as a miner while pursuing vocal training with Davies and Warlich. He gained a place in the chorus of the Carl Rosa Opera Co., and in 1931 made his operatic debut with it as Sparafucile. He was a member of the Sadler’s Wells Opera in London (1946-50; 1956-63); from 1947 he also appeared at London’s Covent Garden, and was active as a concert artist. In 1964 he joined the faculty of the Univ. of Toronto. Among his best roles were Bartolo, Varlaam, and Baron Ochs.
