Gimenez, Raul
Gimenez, Raul, Argentine tenor; b. Santa Fe, Sept. 14, 1950. He received training in Buenos Aires. Following his operatic debut there in 1980 at the Teatro Colon as Ernesto, he appeared in concert and opera in various South American music centers. In 1984 he made his European debut at the Wexford Festival as Filandro in Cimarosa’s La astuzie femminili, and subsequently sang in Paris, Venice, Pesaro, Amsterdam, Rome, Aix-en-Provence, Zurich, and Geneva. He made his U.S. debut as Ernesto in Dallas in 1989, choosing that role for his first appearance at London’s Covent Garden in 1990. He sang Rossini’s Count Almaviva at his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1990. In 1993 he sang for the first time at Milan’s La Scala in Tancredi. In 1994 he portrayed Rossini’s Don Ramiro in Dallas. Gimenez is highly regarded for his roles in Rossini operas, among them Almaviva, Argiro, Rodrigo, Count Alberto, Giocondo, and Florville.
