Giegling, Franz, Swiss musicologist; b. Buchs, near Aarau, Feb. 27, 1921. He studied piano and theory at the Zurich Cons, with Cherbuliez. He received his Ph.D. from the Univ. of Zurich in 1947 with the valuable diss. Giuseppe Torelli, Ein Beitrag zur Entwicklungsgeschichte des italienischen Konzerts (publ. in Kassel, 1949). He was music critic of the Neue Zurcher Zeitung (1947-53), and subsequently worked for Radio Zurich and Radio Basel. Giegling was one of the eds. of the 6th edition of the Kochel catalogue of Mozart’s works; he also contributed articles to Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart.
