Gialdini, Gialdino
Gialdini, Gialdino, Italian conductor and composer; b. Pescia, Nov. 10, 1843; d. there, March 6, 1919. He was a pupil of T. Mabellini in Florence. His first opera, Rosamunda (prize opera in a competition instituted by the Pergola Theater, Florence), given in 1868, was unsuccessful. After producing 2 “opere buffe,” La Secchia rapita (Florence, 1872) and L’ldolo cinese (1874), in collaboration with other musicians, he devoted himself to conducting. Later he again turned to dramatic composition, producing the operas I due sod (Bologna, Feb. 24, 1892), La Pupilla (Trieste, Oct. 23, 1896), and La Bufera (Pola, Nov. 26, 1910). He also publ. Eco della Lombardia, a collection of 50 folk songs.
