Gadzhibekov, Uzeir
Gadzhibekov, Uzeir, Azerbaijani composer; b. Agdzhabedy, near Shusha, Sept. 17, 1885; d. Baku, Nov. 23, 1948. He studied in Shusha, and then lived in Baku, where he produced his first opera on a native subject, Leyly and Medzhnun (Jan. 25, 1908). His comic opera Arshin Mai Alan (Baku, Nov. 27, 1913) had numerous performances; another opera, Kyor-Oglu (A Blind Man’s Son), was premiered at the Azerbaijan Festival in Moscow (April 30, 1937).
