Furuhjelm, Erik Gustaf

Furuhjelm, Erik Gustaf, Finnish composer; b. Helsinki, July 6, 1883; d. there, June 13, 1964. He studied violin, then took lessons in composition with Sibelius and Wegelius. He continued his studies in Vienna with Robert Fuchs. From 1909 to 1935 he lectured on theory at the Helsinki School of Music, and from 1920 to 1935 served as asst. director there. He founded the magazine Finsk Musikrevy, and in 1916 wrote the first book-length biography of Sibelius.
