Fuchs, Carl (Dorius Johannes)
Fuchs, Carl (Dorius Johannes), distinguished German organist and writer on music; b. Potsdam, Oct. 22, 1838; d. Danzig, Aug. 27, 1922. He studied piano with Billow, thoroughbass with Weitzmann, and composition with Kiel. He took his Ph.D. in Greifswald, with the diss. Praliminarien zu einer Kritik der Tonkunst (1871). In 1868 he became a teacher at the Kullak Academy in Berlin; then gave piano concerts in Ger-many. In 1874 he went to Hirschberg, and in 1879, to Danzig, where he was organist at the Petrikirche and music critic of the Danziger Zeitung (1887–1920). He was also organist for many years at the Synagogue in Danzig. His letters were publ. by his son, Hans Fuchs, in Ostdeutsche Monatshefte (Sept. 1923).
