FrotSCher, Gotthold, German musiciologist; b. Ossa, near Leipzig, Dec. 6, 1897; d. Berlin, Sept. 30, 1967. He studied in Bonn and Leipzig, receiving his Ph.D. from the Univ. of Leipzig in 1922 with the diss. Die Ästhetik des Berliner Liedes. He completed his Habilitation at the Technische Hochschule in Danzig with his Hauptprobleme der Musikästhetik im 18. Jahrhundert (1924; publ. in Danzig, 1924). He taught at the Univ. of Danzig (1924–32) and then was a prof, at the Univ. of Berlin (1935–5); from 1950 he taught at the Pedagogische Hochschule in Berlin. He wrote the valuable Geschichte des Orgelspiels und der Orgelkomposition (2 vols., Berlin, 1935; 3rd ed., rev, 1966); also publ. Aufführungspraxis alter Musik (Wilhelmshaven, 1963; 4th ed., 1977) and Orgeln (Karlsruhe, 1968).
